Doss and Hartman - State History Day Champs

Troy Students are History Day State Champs!!!

Malique Doss and Lane Hartman win 1st place at the State History Day contest for their senior group documentary entitled, The 24 Second Revolution.  They explain how the shot clock saved NBA basketball. Doss and Hartman will represent Troy High School at the national contest in College Park, Maryland (just outside Washington DC), in June.

Each year, students are required to match the History Day theme.  This year the theme was Revolutions in History.  When describing his project, Doss said “revolutions don't have to be huge wars or big protests, but can go unnoticed while serving a big change.”  Hartman noted the most difficult part of the project was “our whole project deleted, and we had to completely restart not long before they were due.”  In addition to the national contest, both students are excited to see the sites in Washington, D.C., especially the White House and Washington Monument.

Additionally, Tillie Keller won 3rd place and is the alternate to participate at the national contest. She wrote a historical paper on the National Cancer Act of 1971. She details how passage of the act enabled funding for cancer research, leading to developments which created life-saving techniques for cancer patients.

Other state qualifiers included Colton Sigrist, Jaxton Fuemmeler, Abby McConnaughy, Hayleigh Cluck, Aliona Garrison.

History Day is sponsored at Troy High/Middle School by Derek Frieling and Amanda Rullman.
